About Us

Australia’s original adventure horseback tour operators, the Lovicks first took skiers overland to Mt Buller in the late 1800s. Thus began a tradition of horse riding tours celebrating the romance and adventure of Victoria’s legendary high country. Seven generations later, Charlie and Glenda Lovick invite you to join them in an adventure of a lifetime.

The Lovick family is among a small group of pioneering men and women who have lived and worked in the Victorian high country for generations. In 1929 Mt Lovick was named in recognition of their long-standing connection with the land. Known as mountain cattlemen, the Lovicks grazed their cattle in the mountains throughout summer and in 1967 established their first adventure tour company, allowing people from all walks of life to learn the values and traditions of mountain cattlemen.

Glenda and Charlie Lovick have over 40 years experience operating internationally renowned adventure horseback riding tours in the Mansfield Mt Buller region. They were married in 1973 and have created a life together where traditional mountain cattlemen values, eco tourism and education are a way of life. Based at Merrijig and Sheepyard Flat, near Mansfield, the Lovicks offer a range of tours and accommodation, including Man From Snowy River tours, cattle drives, weekend horse rides, trail rides, school camps, corporate team building and bush weddings.

The Lovick name is synonymous with mountain cattlemen. They are celebrated horsemen, able to cover enormous distances on horseback, plunging down hillsides, sprinting through scrub and jumping just about anything, quintessential Australian bushmen and storytellers.

Over the years, Charlie has worked hard to earn mountain cattlemen a place in history. He is one of the Top 20 Victorian Identities for Visit Victoria and was awarded a Churchill Fellowship in 2009 to study nature based tourism overseas. He is a past Vice President of the Mountain Cattlemen's Association of Victoria, an association dedicated to keeping mountain cattlemen traditions alive.

In 1982, Charlie was credited 'Master of Horse' for the film The Man From Snowy River and taught leading actor, 'The Man' Tom Burlinson, to ride. Sigrid Thornton, Kirk Douglas and Eric Bana have also received horse riding lessons from Charlie. Eric Bana (who scrubbed up on his riding skills for the Hollywood blockbuster, Troy) is quoted as saying, “I reckon five lessons with Charlie is worth 105 with anyone else.”

In Februry 2011, 'The Man' Tom Burlinson returned to ride with Lovicks, sharing memories of the movie and songs around the campfire. You can join Tom for the ride of your life with Lovicks Man From Snowy River Ride through the mountains made famous in the movie.
