School Camps

In spring and summer, Lovicks school camps provide a unique experience and insight into the pioneering spirit of adventure, history and traditions of Australia's high country cattlemen.

Living legend Charlie Lovick has worked hard to earn mountain cattlemen a place in history. Named one of Victoria’s Top 20 Victorian Identities, Charlie speaks with a passion and intelligence that will resonate with your students. Our school camps provide a gateway to Australian history as experienced from the saddle in one of Australia’s most stunning wilderness areas. Our horses have excellent temperaments and physical ability, and our meals are simply delicious. Key staff members have formal qualifications with the Association of Horse Safety and Education (AHSE) providing students with expert instruction and encouragement throughout their stay.

Each school camp is carefully designed to achieve your specific outcomes. Guided by genuine high country horsemen and women, students will gain a thorough grounding in horsemanship while learning about Australia’s bush environment and its history. They will gain confidence and develop new respect for the environment and each other.

School camps may include:

  • Alpine National Park
  • Howqua Hills historic gold mining areas
  • Fry's Hut and The Tunnel Spur
  • The Rand and many more mine sites
  • Film sites made famous in The Man From Snowy River including Craig's Hut, Mt Stirling, The Bluff, Mt Lovick and Mt Howitt
  • Bush walking, tree climbing, fly fishing

We have four unique options for accommodation. You will be sure to leave the city life behind as your group experiences life in true high country style:

  • Merrijig Farm - 500-acre farming property
  • Seeforth Station - 100-acre outstation and rustic bush camp at Sheepyard Flat.
  • The Dungeon - 100-acre picturesque camp out property in Dungeon Gully.

School Camp

Xavier College have conducted week long horse riding camps with the Lovick’s for the past 3 years as part of our year 10 elective Outdoor Education program. It has been highly successful for a number of reasons and has seen the number of students who wish to attend this program double as word has spread amongst the students on their return.

The Lovick family are original settlers of the Merrijig and Howqua districts and are expert masters of horse as their tradition has been one of riding on the high plains as mountain cattlemen. I mentioned that the camp has been successful for a number of reasons so I will list them:

  1. Expert leadership in horsemanship and safety.
  2. Horses of excellent temperament and physical ability.
  3. An original experience with genuine mountain cattle people and the ability to be welcomed into their lifestyle.
  4. Excellent meals
  5. Access to the Howqua hills on the Lovick’s property next to the Howqua river.
  6. An education for the students by genuine mountain cattle people about the bush environment and its history.

I have no hesitation in recommend this educational experience as it is hard to find an experience that is so genuine and challenging.

Hi there,

I just wanted to shoot you an email to say a BIG THANK YOU.
The dungeon campsite gave our young participants the perfect environment to talk, share, explore, relax, and think.
When we arrived at the campsite, we found it very clean and were excited about the potential the space could offer our program.
The trail riding session was also great. Your staff were professional and friendly and were always keen to assist the group’s needs throughout the activity.

Again, I would like to say a BIG THANK YOU and will be recommending Lovicks to others.

Cheers,

Mark Fowler
